SUMILON™ Companion Plate for Cell Culture Insert is compatible with six different commercially available cell culture inserts. This product is designed to securely hold the cell culture inserts in place using a notch at the well aperture. Additionally, a port adjoining the main well (“the Port”) provides sufficient space for pipette tip insertion, facilitating easy cell culture medium exchange and sampling in various experiments, such as drug permeability testing, without the risk of cell damage and contamination. It also supports running experiments and TEER measurements with automation.

SUMILON™ Companion Plate for Cell Culture Insert
- Holding different types of cell culture inserts in place with the designed notch at the well aperture, securing users to tilt the plate and the insert for manual or automated handling.
- Medium exchange and sampling can be performed from the plate through a port adjoining the main well (“the Port”), without lifting the inserts. The Port also provides sufficient space for the electrode of a TEER measurement instrument.
- The well bottom, including the Port area, is cell culture-treated and offers a culture area comparable to conventional 24-well plates (187.5 mm²), enabling co-culture in both the insert and the plate bottom.
BACKGROUND: The conventional plate method with cell inserts
Conventionally, media is replaced using a pipette or aspirator. However, because of the small gap between the well and insert, there is insufficient space for the tip of the pipette or aspirator. To conduct the media exchange, inserts have to be lifted one at a time using tweezers or other tools which is a labor-intensive process.
6 Types of Cell Inserts
- This Auto Exchange 24 Well Plate can be used with six types of cell inserts of various shapes available from different manufacturers.
- As the well is shaped to hold the cell inserts firmly, their position is not altered during media exchange. The micro-steps on the inner sides of the well prevent the rise in liquid level that can occur due to capillary action caused by dimension difference in the gap between the insert and well. This design ensures the robustness of the assay and protects the cells during experiments.
- A step on the well wall mitigates the capillary-driven rise in liquid level between the well and the insert. Furthermore, a groove on the well wall aids in draining the culture medium.
- The space surrounding each well is prepared to accommodate sterilized water, which helps prevent drying of the culture medium.
For various cell culture insert experiments, including drug permeability testing, toxicity testing, cell migration and invasion assays, and co-culture studies.
